Type and application of binding paperboard after printing

release date: Source: China paper industry

paperboard refers to a kind of paper product that is thicker, heavier and firm than paper, with a general ration of more than 400g/m2. The thickness of the binding paperboard is 0.7mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm. The thickness of the commonly used book cover paperboard is 1.5-2.5mm

paperboard is one of the main materials for binding processing, especially the indispensable materials for making hardcover, ancient thread binding and various folders. The thickness, tightness, flatness, moisture content and strength of paperboard, as the backbone of the book sealing shell, are closely related to the processing effect of books. Therefore, it is very important to understand the types, performance and quality of paperboard, and correctly select the paperboard that is suitable for the processing needs of each variety to produce high-quality products. types and performance of binding paperboard

there are three kinds of commonly used binding paperboards, namely grey white paperboard, straw paperboard and yellow paperboard

1. Gray background whiteboard

gray background whiteboard, also known as book cover paperboard, is a kind of paperboard designated in the national industry standard to be used as book cover. Since the late 1970s, it has been applied to the production of book cover, with good results, and has been used until now. Grey bottom whiteboard is made of ground wood pulp, semi chemical wood pulp, straw pulp and the same waste pulp in a multi-layer (generally three-layer) structure. The surface of grey white paperboard is smooth (after calendering), which is suitable for making all kinds of book covers

grey background whiteboard is the most used paperboard for making book covers and various folders at present. Due to the strict requirements for material selection and production, this kind of paperboard has the advantages of appropriate water content, small elongation, good elasticity, appropriate tightness, smooth surface, and not easy to deform after gluing. It is favored by the processing units of books and periodicals and this volume, and is determined as a special paperboard for making book cover

at present, there are many manufacturers producing grey base white board in China, but the product quality is not stable enough. There are often problems such as uneven board surface, excessive water content, large thickness tolerance, unstable layers (easy to cut and layer), block scar and so on, which bring great trouble to binding processing. Although the product quality has been improved in recent years, it is still inevitable to be impacted by the imported cardboard. In order to ensure the smooth processing, the following points should be paid attention to when using gray background whiteboard

(1) cardboard of appropriate grade shall be selected according to the grade of the processed products, and the appropriate thickness shall be selected according to the thickness and size of the book

(2) when the moisture content of the paperboard is too high in winter, do not rush to open the material for use. Store it for a period of time to make its moisture evaporate naturally, and then use it after reaching a balance with the ambient humidity. Avoid drying after cutting, which will reduce the size of the book cover shell and cannot be combined with the book block

(3) adopt the automatic bronzing machine and its environmental protection benefit of 10 significant man hours. If it is found that the thickness tolerance of the paperboard is large, it should be checked and selected in advance, and roughly separated according to the thickness. It can also be processed by the manual bronzing machine

(4) when the paperboard layer is found to be poorly bonded (separated from the layer) during cutting, it is not allowed to cut it into a small format, and it is not suitable for medium diameter paperboard, because the appearance of the book will be uneven, convex, warped, etc. after the paperboard with poor interlayer is pasted into the book cover, which will affect the appearance quality of the book

the width of grey white board is generally 1100mm × 800mm、1350mm × 920mm, etc. shall be packed in the form of flat plate, and the weight of each piece shall not exceed 250kg

2. Straw paperboard

straw paperboard is also called horse dung paperboard. Its surface is rough and yellow. Its main raw material is straw fiber. Straw paperboard is a kind of binding paperboard used earlier in China, and it is also a kind of paperboard with a wide range of uses. The thickness of straw board is generally 0.7mm, which can be increased after mounting. This kind of paperboard has low tightness, large elongation, poor toughness and strong surface moisture absorption and permeability. It is easy to warp and deform due to water penetration after gluing, but its price is low. It can be used for processing low-grade book covers. Straw paperboard is different from grey paperboard in terms of raw materials and processing technology. The following points should be paid attention to when using this kind of paperboard as a book cover

(1) do not rush to use the straw paperboard after purchase. Store it for a period of time to make it flat and comfortable

(2) when wet cardboard is encountered, it should be stored for a period of time to make it naturally dry to a certain extent before use. If possible, use a pressboard machine to heat it before use (the heating temperature is generally about 65 ℃) and pressurize it to make the rough surface of the straw board smooth, the tightness increased, and the humidity appropriate (save reasonable internal moisture)

(3) when pasting the book seal shell, the binder with less moisture, fast drying and good viscosity shall be used, and the lining sweeping process shall be improved to make the tension of the inner seal (the second and third seals) greater than the tension of the outer seal, so as to avoid the outward warping of the current book seal shell after processing

(4) when making a book cover with a width of more than 16, a single lining should be mounted inside the cover to achieve the balance of large format tension

the width of straw paperboard is generally 1092mm × 787mm、787mm × 660mm、787mm × 546mm, etc. are packed in the form of flat plate, and the weight of each piece is generally not more than 150kg

straw paperboard is inferior to grey white paperboard in quality, but its price is low. It is used for general middle and low-grade books. As long as scientific methods are adopted in the process, the quality can be guaranteed

3. Yellow paperboard

yellow paperboard is a kind of paperboard with smoky brown (the same color as kraft paper), smooth surface, hard texture and great toughness. It is commonly used in shoe making (as the bottom of the hall) and box making (as the inner ribs). When binding, it is mainly used for making the outer envelope and part of the book envelope. The outer cover of the book made of yellow cardboard is durable and not easy to wear, and can protect the book and improve the grade of the book. Because of its high tightness and small thickness error, it is also conducive to the control of hot stamping pressure. There are two main ways to make the outer envelope of a book with yellow paperboard: one is to make the envelope directly by pasting the yellow paperboard after indentation die cutting; The other is to paste a layer of soft materials such as paper or fabric on the surface after making the envelope to decorate the appearance of the envelope. The following points shall be paid attention to during processing when it is used for shell making and envelope

(1) the yellow paperboard is hard and tough, and it is difficult to correct the warping deformation once it is made. Therefore, after making the case, a certain pressure shall be applied by means of a press or stacking to prevent the case from warping and deformation

(2) the yellow paperboard has high hardness and is suitable for pressing concave convex marks. It is firm and durable without deformation, but the hot stamping pressure is greater than that of other paperboards

(3) when the finished product is processed for lining sweeping, the tension inside the seal must be greater than the tension outside the seal to prevent the external tension from being too large, and the book case from warping upward and not easy to be leveled

the width of yellow paperboard is generally 1350mm × 920mm、1120mm × 990mm, etc. are packed in flat form, and the weight of each piece is not more than 250kg

type and performance of paperboard

paperboard is a kind of paper product with a thickness between paper and paperboard, and its weight is generally 250-400g/m2. There are two types of paper cards: one is a double-sided white card, and the other is a gray white card (white on the surface and gray on the bottom)

1. Gray white card

gray white card, also known as single-sided gray paperboard, consists of three layers: the surface layer is white, smooth and flat, and can be printed; The middle layer is a filler layer with poor raw materials; The bottom layer is gray and rough. The gray white card is soft, thin, crisp and folding resistant, and the bottom layer has strong moisture absorption. It is commonly used in various packing boxes. After compounding, it can be used as a stamp album, CD cover, etc

this kind of binding material is mainly used for the processing of soft book case, looper hard lining, soft book cover, medium diameter paperboard, back card, etc. The following points should be paid attention to when the gray card is used for binding

(1) when making soft shell, appropriate adhesive shall be selected according to the material to be adhered to prevent loose adhesion or deformation

(2) when the demand for paperboard raw materials for flat lock book back is optimistic and positive, soak the paperboard in hot water for about 10 hours before use to make it thoroughly soaked and soft before use (it is best to add a small amount of animal bones in the soaking water to prevent hairiness and post line during cutting)

(3) when making the looper hard lining, the bottom surface should be mounted and adhered to the ring lining, because the bottom surface is rough and has strong permeability, which is easy to bond the paper, and the exposed surface can facilitate the sleeve processing (insert sleeve) of the book block and the book cover

(4) when it is used for the medium diameter paperboard of the book case, it should be noted that it is only limited to the round back book case, not applicable to the square back false ridge, and the adhesive surface of the bottom surface should be exposed

(5) when the gray white card is used for compounding, attention should be paid to the selection of adhesive and the correct application process to ensure that it is flat, tidy, firm and free from layer separation after compounding

2. White card (double-sided white)

white card is higher than gray white card. White card consists of three layers: the surface and bottom layers are white, smooth and flat, and can be used for double-sided printing; The middle layer is a filler layer with poor raw materials. The white card is hard, thin and crisp, and has a wide range of uses, such as making various high-end packaging boxes, cigarette boxes, cups, children's books, etc. White cards for binding are mainly used for soft cover book case, Paperback Cover, instruction manual, hard lining, etc

storage and safekeeping of paperboard

the correct storage and safekeeping of paperboard (including paperboard) is one of the important factors to ensure the binding quality of books and periodicals

1. Storage conditions

the cardboard shall be stored in a well ventilated warehouse or workshop with appropriate temperature and humidity. The paperboard shall not be damped to avoid deformation or aging separation; It should not be placed in the open air, because the cardboard itself needs to maintain its internal reasonable moisture. If the cardboard is exposed to the sun and heating for a long time, the normal moisture will evaporate, the fiber will become brittle and the strength will be reduced, resulting in surface warpage and unnecessary loss

2 expand from a relatively small market to other areas of processing and production Storage method

the production date of the purchased paperboard should be known first. If it is made by cold pressing and has a short delivery time, it cannot be used immediately. It should be stored for a period of time. Because the newly purchased paperboard is generally of high toughness and poor flexibility, after reasonable storage for a period of time, the toughness of the paperboard can be reduced, the flexibility can be increased, and the paperboard is neat and easy to process. The time for storing cardboard is generally 3-6 months. If the cardboard is stored for more than 1 year, it is necessary to transfer the cardboard to the warehouse once to make the water content of the cardboard stack balanced. During storage, the paperboard shall also be stacked on the paper table and shall not be in direct contact with the ground
